- A taxicab is seeking passengers when its white rooftop number light is lit.
If only the outer lights of the rooftop unit are lit, the taxi is not
picking up passengers. If the taxi is off-duty, the words “Off Duty” appear on the rooftop unit. Taxi driver’s
may hesitate leaving Manhattan, so it's good practice to tell the cab driver your Greenpoint destination
only after entering the cab, by which time law demands that they take you to your destination.
- To get to Greenpoint from Lower Manhattan (i.e. Battery Park, Wall Street, Staten Island Ferry)
tell the cab driver to take the Brooklyn Bridge. On the Brooklyn side of the river, head north on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway
(a.k.a. I-278), to the Humboldt Street Exit (exit #33). At the stoplight, take a left. After passing under the B.Q.E., you will be on
the southern end of McGuinness Boulevard, which runs the length of Greenpoint. Take a left or right, depending on your destination in Greenpoint.
- To get to Greenpoint from Downtown Manhattan (i.e. SoHo, East Village,
Greenwich Village, Tribeca)
tell the cab driver to take the Williamsburg Bridge.
- If you're between 26th Street and 46th Street, consider using the
Queens-Midtown tunnel. Although there's a $4.00 toll for using the tunnel, it will cost less (or at most, the same) as
driving to one of the bridges. The tunnel does lack the slight psychological uplift that the the bridges offer.
To get to Greenpoint from Midtown Manhattan via the Queens-Midtown Tunnel,
tell the cab driver to take the Tunnel (i.e. I-495 E) and exit at the Borden Avenue/Pulaski Bridge exit. The taxi should
follow Borden Avenue to Vernon Boulevard and then onto Jackson Avenue. At 11th Street, the cab will cross the Pulaski Bridge.
You will now be on the northern end of McGuinness Boulevard, which runs the length of Greenpoint. Take a left or right,
depending on your destination in Greenpoint.
- To get to Greenpoint from Uptown Manhattan (i.e. Upper East Side, Upper West Side)
tell the cab driver to take the Queensboro Bridge at 59th Street. On the Brooklyn side of the river, head south onto Queens Boulevard, to 21st Street
then onto Jackson Avenue to the Pulaski Bridge. You will be on the northern end of McGiunness Boulevard, which runs the length
of Greenpoint. Take a left or right, depending on your destination in Greenpoint.
